Noise pollution is unwanted sounds that intrude on our daily life. In today's busy world many of us expect a certain amount of noise - the constant whirring of computers or air conditioners, the sound of busy traffic, or a running car engine. In fact, due to the high population density and the mixed land use in Hong Kong , noise pollution can be particularly bad in some areas.
When noise pollution mounts up it can have a negative effect on employees and the public in general. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that noise can affect human health and well-being and can cause stress, aggression, high blood pressure, sleep loss and hearing loss.
Noisy work environments can affect employees' health and productivity. That's why noise pollution at work is controlled by the Labour Department.
