Commitment to environmental protection
Aegean Coast is committed to environmental protection through managing its use of energy and water and through waste reduction. In the first six months of 2008, an increment of 74% was achieved in the amount of recyclables collected, compared to 2007. Energy savers installed on air-conditioning systems and energy-saving lights in the car park resulted in a reduction of 19% in electricity consumption. A solar water heater is in use and the possibility of installing wind turbines to generate renewable energy is being investigated. In water conservation, swimming pool water is reused for floor cleaning.
Excellence in employee management
‘We provide time off and subsidies for staff to attend job-related training to encourage professional development amongst staff,’ said Mary Ng. Aegean Coast also devotes great efforts to ensure the health and safety of staff, including the development and use of mechanical aids to minimise the risks associated with heavy physical work. In October 2007, Aegean Coast was awarded the Safe and Healthy Estate with Excellent Performance from the Occupational Safety and Health Council.
Achievements in community development
‘Through mobilising staff and residents, we achieved over 2,000 voluntary hours in 2007, almost double the number of hours in 2006,’ Mary said, ‘and our corporate volunteer team won the Gold Award for Volunteer Service from the Social Welfare Department.’
Overall management quality and effectiveness
Regular home visits, tea gatherings, annual surveys and a ‘Meet and Greet’ Programme are organised to collect feedback and maintain close communication with residents. To ensure the environmental and social performance of its sub-contractors, Aegean Coast conducts regular reviews to ensure their performance meets the required standard.
‘Being able to attain a balance between business development and corporate responsibility fulfilment will lead to a ‘triple win’ situation for the company regarding economic, environmental and social aspects,’ Mary added.
