Diamond Award winner – HSBC Living Business Awards 2008
‘This award serves as an affirmation of LTK’s hard work in the past as well as an encouragement to all our staff because it is the result of their concerted efforts.’
Established in 1981 and headquartered at the Hong Kong Science Park, LTK International Limited (LTK) specialises in producing cables for consumer electronics and telecommunications, with six research and development and production facilities in Japan and mainland China, including Huizhou, Shanghai, Dalian and Chongqing.
Commitment to environmental protection
LTK adopts an environmental policy beyond ISO 14001 requirements to control its environmental impact. A centralised Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) department was set up in 2007 to manage and coordinate EHS issues associated with its operations. A number of energy-saving measures are in place, including a solar water heating system, a water cooling curtain and a reflective roof in the production plants which save approximately 2,600kWh of electricity every day.
Excellence in employee management
‘Employee management and development are LTK’s core corporate values and we provide a wide range of training and development programmes for our staff, including an e-learning platform consisting of over 900 courses,’ said Dr Yeung. Staff at LTK also enjoy benefits and welfare which are beyond the legislative requirements, such as paternity leave, study leave and staff’s children’s scholarships. Recreation activities such as sports days, overseas tours and interest classes are organised regularly to raise staff morale, team spirit and general well-being.
Achievements in community development
LTK is responsive to the needs of the community. An emergency relief committee was set up immediately after the Sichuan Earthquake to coordinate fundraising activities. Apart from the dollar-to-dollar matching granted by its holding company, Beldon, LTK took immediate action to purchase camping tents for staff in Chongqing who were affected by the earthquake. The tents were delivered from Shenzhen to Chongqing by company trucks to ensure they arrived in the shortest possible time. In addition, a 24-hour emergency hotline was also set up to assist staff and their families in China.
Overall management quality and effectiveness
‘Management’s commitment and staff involvement are crucial to the implementation of socially and environmentally responsible practices,’ said Dr Yeung. LTK’s ‘Target to Improve’ programme involves staff from different departments meeting each month to discuss various business matters. A green assurance audit was performed at each factory in 2007 to ensure its production procedures, products and supply chain met all the environmental compliance rules. To further enhance its supply chain management, environmental and corporate responsibility-related training is provided for suppliers.
‘In fulfilling our corporate responsibility, we can raise the capability and commitment of our staff, which in turn strengthen the human capital and market value of the company,’ Dr Yeung said.
